Sometimes as gamers, and people, it can be easy for us to take for granted so many of the things that we simply see as normal, such as picking up a controller to play a game with complex mechanics. The truth is that not everyone has this luxury due to various disabilities and not many games go out of their way to make themselves more accessible. Thankfully, there is AbleGamers, a charity that represents and raises awareness for disabled gamers.
Every year, AbleGamers looks at the crop of new games for ones that are made with accessibility in mind, and for 2014 they selected Bayonetta 2 as the Most Accessible Mainstream Game. Most of us know Bayonetta 2 for its challenging, intricate combat, but developer Platinum went out of its way to add a variety of simplified control schemes to make the game more accessible.
While announcing the winner, AbleGamers stated, “The inclusion of a one-button combat mode creates an experience other character action titles should implement. As a proof of concept, this game demonstrates that accessibility can be implemented into a mainstream AAA game without harming any of the gameplay.”
AbleGamers also described Bayonetta 2 as being friendly to colorblind gamers.
I personally remember numerous instances of gamers complaining about easy modes or simplified control mechanics over the years, so I think next time we want to get up in arms about games being “watered down,” we should remember that there is something to be said for making a game accessible for those who would otherwise have no other way of playing it.
