Azure Striker Gunvolt, the spiritual successor to the likes of the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series, created quite a stir when it launched on the 3DS eShop back in August of 2014. Mixing classic run-and-gun platforming action with modern gameplay sensibilities, Gunvolt was a pleasingly full-fledged, AAA-quality release for Nintendo’s handheld. Nintendojo certainly got quite a thrill out of the game when we reviewed it, and it’s with great pleasure that we’ve learned the title has now topped global downloads of over 140,000 copies!

While Gunvolt is also available on PC, it’s wonderful to know that the game has found an enthusiastic audience on 3DS. Its success certainly gives credence to the opinion that series like Mega Man can still resonate with fans today. What developer Inti Creates has produced here is pretty special, and the update it received last year only served to make the title even better. With a sequel slated to drop sometime in the future, things are looking bright for fans of this style of game!

Have you played Azure Striker Gunvolt? What do you think of its hitting 140,000 downloads? Let us know in the comments!

I enjoy Gunvolt exactly the same way I enjoy many Mega Man games:
    – love the opening stage
    – love the choose-your-own-path stages
    – love the late game levels
    – get frustrated and give up at boss-after-boss-after-boss

Young me couldn’t afford tons of games, so I may have stuck with it and eventually mastered it anyway. Today there’s a limit to the number of times I can fail a long slog and still be having fun.

The rest of the game, though? Truly excellent! I’m glad I got it.
