Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming to theaters on December 20, 2024. While anticipation is high for the film, there lingers (quite understandably) in the minds of fans the question of what comes next for the series. At this point, it seems that Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik won’t be coming back (but hey, for enough cash, who knows, right?), but there are quite a few other Sonic regulars that fans would love to see hit the silver screen. Director Jeff Fowler is well aware of this, and is thus teasing that fans might want to keep their eyes on the screen for someone new to make an appearance before the final curtain draws closed.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fowler said the following:
It’s fun to see the fan debates online about who’s coming up next, who’s going to be teased at the end of the film. We have a lot of the same conversations. We’ve all got our favorites on the filmmaking side, and we’re all making great cases for ‘it should be this one or that one.’ It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.
“No different in terms of teasing new characters,” eh? That sounds rather promising, as previously Sonic’s buddy Tails was teased at the end of the first film, and for the second film everyone got a glimpse at Shadow. Now the question becomes, who will be getting the nod for Sonic 3? Amy Rose, Silver the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic, or even reviled beloved pal Big the Cat are all possibilities, but there are many others besides.
