Splatoon 2 is much like its predecessor in that despite already coming with a healthy amount of content in tow, it continues to churn out updates that bring more items, maps, and other goodies in the form of a steady wave of DLC. While the extra content has all been free up to this point, the impending Octo Expansion marks the first paid DLC the series has ever offered. Nintendo is doing its best to make the new content worthy of its $20 asking price by breaking down what fans can expect once it launches this summer.

Producer Hisashi Nogami delves into the upcoming DLC in the video below:

Nogami brings up some very interesting tidbits about Octo Expansion—we’ve parsed through them for you if you want to cut right to the chase:

  • The design team wanted to create a new world that looked and felt different than anything seen in the series to date.
  • Octo Expansion starts players off with an amnesiac lead who can’t remember their identity or where they’re supposed to be. Uncovering the truth at the heart of this mystery is a huge part of the campaign.
  • Nogami broke down the new X Rank, which is granted to any player at level S+10. Along with the Rank of X, they’ll also be granted a value to their profile referred to as X Power. There will be a monthly competition between X Rank players to determine who has the top X Power.
  • The Octo Expansion campaign has over 80 single-player stages that incorporate a wide variety of weapons so as to get players to experiment more with the artillery that Splatoon 2 has to offer.

There’s still no firm release date for the Octo Expansion beyond this summer, but we’ll surely see more of it at this year’s E3. Keep it tuned to Nintendojo as we cover the event and all things Splatoon 2 related as they’re revealed!
