Since Super Smash Bros. Melee, fans have speculated about which characters would end up in the game’s roster. Despite the fact that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS has been out for nearly a year now, the game’s downloadable content has kept the rumor cycle alive and well. The latest rumored addition is Professor Layton, the star of several games on the DS and 3DS, courtesy of developer Level-5.
The rumor initially seemed to stem from an IMDB listing for Super Smash Bros. An edit on the site back in July added Layton’s voice actor, Christopher Robin Miller, to the game’s voice cast. Miller denied the rumor last month, but the question came up again this weekend, leading Miller to voice (no pun intended) his approval for the character to appear in Nintendo’s illustrious fighting franchise.
I actually have no idea if I am going to be in Smash Brothers. Nintendo will know before I do. I hope it’s true.
Professor Layton would certainly make for an interesting addition to the Super Smash Bros. roster. Level-5 and Nintendo have had a close relationship for years, and the character has become synonymous with Nintendo handhelds since debuting in Professor Layton and the Curious Village in 2007. Since then, the franchise has sold more than 15 million units.
