Back in September, we had reported that Netflix was underway working on an animated adaptation of the Tomb Raider franchise. Now, it has been announced that the show is titled Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft and will be coming to the streaming platform starting October 10, 2024. Here’s what Netflix has to say about the show, including where it’s set within the Tomb Raider timeline:
“The series continues right after the events of the Survivor Trilogy of video games — Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider — and finds Lara abandoning her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. However, Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.”
The Tomb Raider video game series has recently come under fire due to censorship and claims of the original games being “harmful” from developer Crystal Dynamics. Whether or not this will impact the storytelling in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft remains to be seen.
