Crystal Dynamics isn’t doing much to endear itself with the Tomb Raider fanbase, as of late. After already sparking a great deal of controversy over remarks smearing the original Tomb Raider games as “harmful,” Crystal Dynamics has now opted to censor content it seems to think is too sexually suggestive. Despite the fact that Lara Croft is arguably the most famous femme fatale in all of video games, the following posters have been edited out of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered in the latest update:

The lockers above are now bare following the update. Needless to say, this has sparked quite a lot of outrage from fans, fans who were already displeased with Crystal Dynamics initial comments about the series’ past. Aspyr, the actual developer of Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, hasn’t issued a statement regarding the removal of the posters, but given Crystal Dynamics’ previous statements, clearly something is happening behind the scenes regarding the content in the collection.

In recent years, censorship, either in the form of removing and altering content, as well as so-called trigger warnings, have become common across media, from games to books to movies, and more in between. It is a disturbing trend, one that consumers aren’t being given a say over. Why couldn’t the posters be optionally toggled on or off, for example, versus outright removing them? This writer certainly doesn’t support such efforts, but there are some who think this sort of thing is necessary.
