This weekend, an interesting new Super Mario Maker screenshot appeared on Miiverse, setting off a flurry of speculation. The screenshot features a sprite of Tingle from the Zelda series in the place of Mario. We’ve mirrored the image below for your viewing pleasure!
We’ve known for some time that a scanned Amiibo figure will unlock an 8-bit sprite of that character for use in Super Mario Maker. That having been said, those sprites will also be unlockable in the game through other means, so this doesn’t necessarily mean that a Tingle figure is in the works. If that’s the case, however, it also stands to reason that the game will likely have other character sprites that haven’t gotten an Amiibo yet. So, either Nintendo does have a new Tingle Amiibo on the way, or Super Mario Maker will feature a ton of various Nintendo-inspired sprites. Either way, it’s fun to speculate!
That isn’t the only sprite recently revealed on Miiverse. Sonic the Hedgehog’s 8-bit sprite has also been discovered. As if Super Mario Maker didn’t already feature enough classic game references, old-school gamers should recognize Sonic’s 8-bit likeness from his appearances in the Master System and Game Gear Sonic titles! Talk about attention to detail!
Super Mario Maker will release on September 11. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information as the game’s release draws closer!
Terrific. I wonder if we can just either download the characters or if Nintendo will hold them hostage behind Amiibo.
