Sonic Frontiers (which just got a Definitive Edition on Switch 2) was the last all-new 3D game to feature the Blue Blur, launching in 2022 on Nintendo Switch; after that, Sonic Superstars was the last all-new 2D game to feature the speedy hedgehog in 2023. It’s been a while since the character has gone on one of his solo adventures, and fans are no doubt wondering when something new will come there way. Series producer Takashi Iizuka isn’t saying when to expect Sonic’s next game, but he has revealed that its development is indeed underway.
According to an interview with 4Gamer over in Japan, Iizuka said the following:
I can’t go into specifics about the new game currently under development, but I’m confident that there’s still plenty of room for the series to evolve. …We’ll be creating unprecedented gameplay through various approaches, from characters and story to game systems, so please look forward to it.
It’s not much, but it’s at least confirmation that something is coming down the pike, and Iizuka is still heavily involved. While Sonic Frontiers was imperfect, it was nonetheless an interesting new direction for the series, and Sonic Superstars was similar in its ambition to do something different in 2D.
