The original Moon was developed by Japanese studio Love-de-Lic which had quite the assemblage of talent on staff; the group had collective experience working on such legendary games as Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Romancing SaGa. While Love-de-Lic is no more, Onion Games has taken on the task of bringing Moon to Nintendo Switch. Yoshiro Kimura was the game’s designer and referred to Moon as an “anti-RPG.” This is due to the game’s playful examination and deconstruction of many conventional RPG tropes.
Everything from how the player interacts with NPCs in RPGs to the battle system (which the game does not have!) were flipped on their head in Moon. Players are cast as a young boy who must work his way around the game world’s characters and help free souls. The game was never previously released in English, so this is a first for many Western gamers. Moon has been cited as designer Toby Fox as an inspiration for his similarly subversive RPG Undertale.
