Last Friday, Super Smash Bros. finally released on Wii U, to the delight of many a Nintendo fan. While everyone expected the game to move units, it still managed to impress in a very short period of time! According to Nintendo, over 490,000 copies of the game have been sold at retail and on the eShop in North America. That particular number makes Super Smash Bros. the fastest selling game on the Wii U, blurring past Mario Kart 8‘s previous record.

The sales data comes as good news for Nintendo as it seeks to make up ground against Sony and Microsoft during the holiday season. While the game has yet to release in Europe or Japan, this is certainly a nice start for Nintendo’s popular fighting franchise. It will be interesting to see exactly what role the game will play in spurring console sales throughout the next few weeks. Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, wasted no time in celebrating the news.

The Nintendo holiday is off to a great start, but there’s a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans. With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season.
