It’s easy to take it for granted today after so many sequels and series have been inspired by it, but Super Mario Kart is one of the greatest racing games ever made. Thankfully, this was not lost on the fine people at The National Museum of Play (known as The Strong) in Rochester, New York. Each year, The Strong endeavors to compile a list of inductees for its World Video Game Hall of Fame. The museum has been adding a handful of titles to its hall ever since 2015. Here’s the full list of games from then to 2018:
-

It’s an eclectic and fascinating assemblage of games, for sure, and this year The Strong has unveiled the 2019 class:
- Super Mario Kart
- Mortal Kombat
- Microsoft Solitaire
- Colossal Adventure
As you can see, Super Mario Kart has proudly joined the ranks of these select few. It’s a wonderful nod of honor to a game that established an entire subgenre within the industry, not to mention paved the way for the myriad of innovative, fun spin-offs that have featured Mario and his friends over the years. Super Mario Kart tends to not garner as much attention these days in comparison to the juggernaut installments that have followed it, but the title is just as fun today as it was when it released back in 1992.
