When Star Fox Zero releases on Wii U next week, the title will be dedicated to Satoru Iwata in a touching tribute. In the game’s closing credits, Star Fox Zero is dedicated to “our wingman who fell in battle.”

The tribute is certainly a well deserved one. The former Nintendo president played a major role in the company’s success, and was also pivotal in the development of a number of different games and franchises. A self-described “gamer at heart,” Iwata’s passion for the medium was a strong fit for Nintendo.
Star Fox Zero is not the first major Nintendo release since Iwata’s death last summer, but one of Iwata’s last public appearances tied directly into the game. During last year’s E3 presentation, he appeared as a member of Team Star Fox alongside Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming Kirby: Planet Robobot will feature a similar tribute, considering Iwata’s history with the character.
