Square Enix wants to switch things up. According to President Takashi Kiryu, the company will be slimming down its lineup of titles in the future. In a financial briefing from November of last year, Kiryu stated that Square Enix is focusing too much on its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest brands and not doing enough to target other genres and styles of of games that fans enjoy. Kiryu feels that the company’s recent efforts to put out a wide array of titles fell flat with consumers, resulting in some solid standouts like Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, but also outright failures like the fan-maligned Forspoken.

Kiryu goes on to say that in the future, Square Enix will be cutting back on content in order to focus more on producing a smaller, curated selection of quality games. While he doesn’t say what those games might be, Kiryu does note that “the market is increasingly polarized between blockbuster and indie titles” and that Square Enix will “want to make clearer distinctions going forward” when it comes to the titles the company releases.
