With both Splatoon titles, Nintendo has made a habit of slowly releasing new maps and weapons over time. For a game that places so much emphasis on “staying fresh,” it’s a smart move. When this weekend’s Splatfest kicks off, fans will be treated to a brand-new map, albeit temporarily. The Shifty Station map will apparently appear exclusively during the Splatfest competition, and won’t be added to the regular stage lineup after.

It’s certainly an interesting move. In all likelihood, the stage will appear again in time for the next Splatfest, and the presence of an exclusive map does give fans even more incentive to play during the competitions. The previous title’s Splatfests never seemed to have much trouble getting players, but some teams did find a bit more favor than others. Perhaps more people playing will help fill teams out more fairly!
Splatoon 2‘s next Splatfest will kick off on August 4th, starting at 9 PM Pacific Time and will run for 24 hours.
