Every year video game speedrunners from all over the world gather in one place for a week-long gaming marathon known as Awesome Games Done Quick. They speedrun video games nonstop for a week straight, all to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. After raising over $425,000 during last year’s marathon, they set this year’s goal at $500,000 and smashed it easily, eventually reaching $1,000,000 during the final game of the marathon Chrono Trigger.
Video games get a lot of negative press in the mainstream media, so it’s good that events like these can show us the good that gamers can do. Although the marathon is over you can still watch the archived speedruns here. I especially recommend checking out the four-way Super Metroid race and the blindfolded Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out run. If you enjoy these speedruns be sure to check out SpeedRunsLive and Speed Demos Archive, the sites that organized the event.
