When Skylanders: SuperChargers arrives on Nintendo systems this fall, Amiibo completists will likely find themselves in an interesting predicament. The Wii and Wii U versions of the title will each boast an exclusive Skylanders figure that doubles as an Amiibo. Making things even more complicated, Activision recently revealed that the Dark Editions of the game are also going to be accompanied by special dark versions of Donkey Kong and Bowser. As if that wasn’t enough to make it hard for the true Amiibo completists out there, today, Toys “R” Us announced that the Dark Edition of Skylanders: SuperChargers on Wii will be exclusive to their stores. The company will begin taking pre-orders sometime this week. The game also appears to have some exclusive box art featuring the Koopa King, which we’ve mirrored below.
We’ve seen variant editions of normal Amiibo figures appear as store exclusives before (like the rare Gold Mario), but it will be interesting to see how these Skylanders figures are received by fans and collectors. Aesthetically, the toys are closer to the Skylanders franchise, but the novelty of a figure compatible with even more software is likely to spur some Amiibo fans to take the plunge, as well. Given the high price point of the bundles, not to mention the fact that Bowser will exclusively come with software from a previous console generation, it will be very interesting to see how the title performs, however!
