Atari has been in the middle of a quiet renaissance the past few years. Slowly but surely, the company has been taking its classic collection of games and doing something new with them. From the spectacular compilation game Atari 50, which is basically an interactive documentary, or old games given new spins, like qomp2, Atari has been keeping fans busy of late. That won’t be slowing down anytime soon, as the company is dipping into its back catalog with Yars Rising, a sequel to its influential Yars’ Revenge from 1982. Partnered with the illustrious WayForward, Yars Rising is an all-new adventure boasting new gameplay and a robust storyline. The story is actually at the center of this new trailer that Atari just put out, which will give you insight into what the game is all about:

Here’s a bit more about the story from Atari:

A seemingly bottomless mystery takes Emi from drab office buildings into hidden underground labs, and even to the farthest reaches of space as she uncovers the dark truth behind the QoTech corporation and discovers her own personal connection to an alien race.

Yars Rising is a 2D platformer that incorporates stealth elements, alng with running and shooting gameplay. What’s more, the original Yars’ Revenge gameplay is incorporated as a hacking minigame for Emi to be challenged by. It’s all shaping up to be an intriguing continuation of this long-dormant franchise when it launches on Nintendo Switch starting October 10, 2024.

If you’re on the fence, give this game a chance. Based on the demo (on Steam) this seems right up my alley. I preordered the physical Switch version, because to me an Atari game belongs on a cartridge. :^)

The interplay between the different styles is both clever and genuinely a good time, and it’s also fun to see a Metroidvania with not-too-serious characters and style.

(tangent: Metroid Dread and Yars’ Revenge both involve chipping away at the invincible big bad’s shielding, then lining up and timing your super shot — a very effective and satisfying mechanic!)
