The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a monster hit and, thus, quite naturally was followed up with word of a sequel soon thereafter. Although fans already knew the film would be coming within the next couple of years (and those who want to watch the original again can check out it in theaters starting July 28), Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto surprised everyone with the official release date for the sequel—in Japan! Here’s the message that was released via Nintendo of Japan’s X account (which you can click on to translate):
宮本です。今晩はNintendo Directの放送がありますが、その前にひとつお知らせをさせてください。
スーパーマリオの新たなアニメ映画の日本での公開日が2026年4月24日に決まりました。楽しい映画になるように、イルミネーションのチームと一緒に取り組んでいますので、引き続き楽しみにしてください。— 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) June 18, 2024
The message roughly translates to the following:
Hello, this is Miyamoto. We will be broadcasting a Nintendo Direct tonight, but before that I would like to make an announcement. The release date for the new Super Mario animated movie in Japan has been set for April 24, 2026. We are working with the Illumination team to make it a fun movie, so please continue to look forward to it.
So there you have it: April 24, 2026 is when the next installment of The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise will come to Japanese theaters. How close this will be for Western audiences is unknown, but perhaps we’ll hear more during tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct? Tell us what you think in the comments and on social media!
