With the roster for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS officially closed, it’s easy for fans to feel upset about the exclusion of certain characters. While the title certainly boasts an impressive number of characters, there will always be fans that want more. One fan favorite apparently came closer to making the cut than most, but made it into the game as a Mii Fighter costume instead.
According to director Masahiro Sakurai, Super Mario RPG’s Geno was in consideration as a fighter for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Perhaps more surprisingly, the character was considered for Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well!
When Cloud was officially unveiled, Sakurai mentioned that the deal between Square Enix and Nintendo allowed the team to include Geno as a Mii Fighter costume. Owned by Square Enix, the character has only made a single other appearance besides Super Mario RPG and Super Smash Bros., making a brief cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
While some may be disappointed to know how close Geno came to joining the Smash roster, Sakurai and Square Enix seem well aware of the character’s continued popularity. It seems only a matter of time before the character appears once again.

Wound, meet salt.
All I want is SMRPG2 ;_; why is that so hard ;_;
Because Nintendo is too busy with plastic toy dlc. There are so many games worthy of sequels, but…?
I was leaning more towards that whole Square owns all of the original characters in the game thing, but sure, whatever works for you…
In fairness, Nintendo doesn’t own the character. You can’t really fault them for not doing more with him. This sounds like Sakurai testing the waters for the next game, however. Bet we see him there.
