When Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai unveiled the downloadable characters Ryu and Roy a couple weeks back, some fans were confused as to whether or not they were included as a result of the online character poll Nintendo conducted. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Sakurai confirmed that not only were these characters planned before the polls opened, but we will still see several more downloadable characters in the Wii U/3DS brawler.
“There is a fighter ballot on the official Smash for Wii U/3DS website. We’ve received an extremely large number of votes, but of course, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu were in developed even before the ballot was created. I had a grasp on their popularity and demand, though.
From now until the end, it is going to be fan service, but I can’t keep the development team together forever, so there’s only going to be several more characters. I also ask for your patience, as we need time to develop more content.”
Sakurai’s comments certainly make the build-up for new fighters all the more interesting. The games already have an impressively heavy (yet balanced) roster. Few fighting games have ever been able to boast that kind of number. It would seem that Nintendo’s strategy to lean on DLC to enhance the replay value for their games has paid off quite well in the Wii U era. It’s certainly kept interest alive in Mario Kart 8, as well!
