Is Nintendo Moving Away From SNES Games on the Virtual Console?

N64, DS and GBA seem to be getting the primary focus

A few weeks ago, Nintendo finally brought N64 and DS games to the Wii U Virtual Console service. For the first time in years, titles like Donkey Kong 64 and Yoshi Touch and Go are available for purchase. While Nintendo fans are undoubtedly excited to see the service expand, it may be coming at the cost of other titles.

In a recent statement given to Engadget, publisher Natsume indicated that some Super Nintendo titles like Pocky and Rocky were unlikely to arrive on the Virtual Console because “Nintendo’s focus has moved on to other classic systems.” The Natsume rep also elaborated on the selection process in regards to Virtual Console titles, stating that it’s a collaborative effort between the two companies, with Nintendo handling the majority of the work. IGN reached out to Nintendo, who provided this response:

“Each week Nintendo makes available a mix of Nintendo eShop and Virtual Console games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Combined, these services currently provide gamers with hundreds of fun and interesting downloadable games to choose from. There is no preset schedule as to how many games will become available in a given week, or on which system.”

Nintendo’s official word comes off like a bit of a stock quote, so fans probably shouldn’t read too much into it. At the end of the day, the truth is likely somewhere in between the two statements: we’ll see DS, Game Boy Advance and N64 titles take precedence over Super Nintendo games, but that doesn’t mean more SNES games won’t show up eventually. As long as the demand is there, Nintendo will likely pursue it. After all, we did just get the Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the service. Games with smaller fan support will likely fall by the wayside in favor of more appealing titles. It’s the same reason we haven’t seen Commodore 64 titles arrive on the Wii U.

It’s pretty obvious at this point Wii U is getting the short end of the stick, but I would like to see some Final Fantasy games(including gameboy versions), Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Paladin’s Quest, etc along with of course the 3rd Earthbound game. What about the first four Dragon Warrior/Quest games? Anything else that is extremely hard to find or too costly to justify purchasing I would like to see as well. Not to mention the original Starfox, and even better; the unreleased Starfox 2. Surely it wouldn’t be TOO hard to finish up whatever they need to do to the game and release it. That would be a step in the right direction for Nintendo.
