Nightly News RoundupNintendo confirms Midnight Purple 3DS

While Nintendo displayed a purple 3DS at E3 in 2010, there was no indication as to when, or if, that particular color was going to hit store shelves. However, speculation began last week that the announcement of the new 3DS color was imminent when Sam’s Club posted a listing for the system in Midnight Purple, albeit without a release date.

Today Nintendo confirmed that the Midnight Purple 3DS will indeed be made available to the public in less than one month! It will be released on May 20, coinciding with the launch of Mario Tennis Open. Like all other 3DS models, the price will be set at $169.99.

New details about Cave Story+ on the eShop

In a Destructoid interview, Nicalis CEO Tyrone Rodriguez reaffirmed that Cave Story+ is coming to the eShop “in a month or so.” This updated version of the game Cave Story, which is on the eShop now as a DSiWare game, will feature a widescreen mode and the option to switch the jump buttons. Cave Story+ will also include almost all of the levels featured in the Steam version. The game will be in 3D while retaining its 2D sprite based graphics. Unfortunately, anyone who has already purchased Cave Story on the eShop will still have to pay for Cave Story+, as it will not be offered as a free update.

“To be totally honest, the update is entirely for selfish reasons. I don’t like playing DSiWare games on the 3DS, and I especially don’t like playing Cave Story DSiWare on my 3DS. Instead of being 16×16 pixels, the main character becomes 20×20 and the entire game is a bit blurry. Daisuke made some beautiful pixel art and I want to play it the right way. In a month or so, you’ll see what I mean.”

Rodriguez also made some comments about the Wii U, and what he had to say was quite refreshing compared to the negativity surrounding the upcoming system.

“For what we need, and maybe for other developers, the Wii U’s [capabilities] are more than sufficient for five to ten years. We’re not making AAA games or using a crazy insane 3D engine, but the Wii U can definitely do both. With that said, for what we are doing, we could work on the Wii U easily for another five years without making it break a sweat. We don’t do massive productions.”

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is coming to 3DS, and possibly Wii U

Today Sega announced a sequel to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and the 3DS is among the multiple platforms that the game will be released on.

Sonic and friends are now behind the wheels of transforming vehicles that can change into cars, boats and planes. The game will also feature a new weapon system that will allow for players to both block and evade items and attacks.

Gareth Wilson of Sumo Digital claims that the game was developed “with future platforms in mind,” hinting at a possible release on Wii U. However, Wilson was unable to confirm or deny such a possibility.
