Over the weekend, the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos clinched the two coveted spots in Super Bowl 50. While the game is easily the biggest sporting event of the year in North America, it’s also an event when even the most casual football fans will watch in the hopes of some entertainment during the commercial breaks.
This year, Pokémon fans will have something to look forward to during that time, in the form of a commercial celebrating the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Today, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company revealed the ad, which we’ve embedded below!
The trailer has a couple nice subtle nods for fans to catch. Note the football players with the numbers “19” and “96” as the team departs the locker room (not to mention the motto over the door). Interestingly, the trailer is kind of a general ad for the franchise, rather than for any one specific new game. It does seem kind of odd that the Virtual Console rereleases of the original games and Pokkén Tournament didn’t get any coverage. Still, this is a pretty cool little ad, and it’s really interesting to see the franchise getting such a big mainstream focus.
Super Bowl 50 will air Sunday February 7. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more coverage on the 20th anniversary of Pokémon in the coming months! And be sure to let us know what you thought of the ad in the comments below!
