While the main releases in the Pokémon series get most of the attention, the super successful franchise has spawned many different spin-offs across various platforms and genres. Among these different takes on the Pokémon world, few have been as successful or as long lasting as the series’ marriage with Mystery Dungeon series, a classic franchise of roguelike games many probably never heard of until it fused with Pokémon. Much like the main games, this line of spin-offs has often been released in matching pairs, and two of those pairs will be finding their way to Wii U Virtual Console very soon.
The first pairing is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, which were originally released on GBA and DS, respectively, outside of Japan in 2006. They were followed up in 2008 with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness for Nintendo DS. All four titles will be available via Wii U eShop on Thursday, June 23.
What are your thoughts on these games? I’ve barely touched any of the Mystery Dungeon games, though I did get a chance to review the relatively recent and exceptionally good crossover with the Etrian Odyssey series, and that is definitely worth checking out if you are a hardcore dungeon crawler.
