Wii U might be a beleaguered console, but there’s no denying that its small lineup of software is of a very high quality. Pikmin 3 is one of those marquee titles, and after the pleasant time it gave players when it launched back in 2013 and in the years since, demand for the series seems to be at an all-time high. That said, Pikmin has never been a blockbuster franchise for Nintendo, so there has been a question if Pikmin 4 would ever see the light of day.

Thankfully, the series’ father, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto, recently confirmed that Pikmin 4 is indeed in development, but that the project has taken a backseat in favor of the production of other games. Here’s a glimpse of what Miyamoto had to say about the title when questioned in a recent interview:

“Yes, you are right, and we’re working on [Pikmin 4]. So, you know, when we’re in development we have to create a list of priorities and it has been hard to kind of fit that into that list, but we’re hopefully starting to see that on the list now.”

With NX set to launch next year, it seems likely that Pikmin 4 might find a home on that console, but only time will tell. At least the game isn’t dead!

That quote doesn’t exactly exude confidence that it will be ready soon. Last year Miyamoto said it was “nearly finished”. That seemed to imply it would be either a late Wii U title or a launch title for the NX.

It’s great to get any update really, but hopefully this doesn’t imply slow development overall for the NX launch. The current drought it bad enough. Maybe that’s reading too much into this though.
