Despite the Internet’s near universal love for penguins, the old, Japan-only game Penguin Wars isn’t exactly a household name. Originally released in 1985 for Famicom, and again in 1990 for Game Boy, Penguin Wars was a simple game that tasked players with throwing balls out of their zone and into their opponent’s, with the end goal being to have fewer balls on your side when the clock ran out. Of course penguins were playable in the game, as were several other animals.

Apparently at least a few Japanese developers remember the game fondly, because Famitsu magazine has revealed a Switch remake is in the works. This new version will include a story mode and both local and online multiplayer for up to four people. Penguin Wars is expected to be available in the Japanese eShop sometime this fall.

Considering the fact that the original never saw the light of day outside of Japan, nothing has been said regarding a release in other markets. Thankfully the Switch isn’t region locked so those desperately looking to get in on the game will still have that option should Penguin Wars not get an official worldwide release.
