In the Kickstarter era of gaming, there have been few bigger success stories than Shovel Knight. The title from Yacht Club Games released to critical acclaim, becoming one of Nintendo’s most talked about “Nindies.” At the Gaming Insiders event held in San Francisco last week, the developer shed some light on how the game has performed on each platform. Surprisingly, downloads between the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions accounted for an impressive 50% of all Shovel Knight downloads. According to Yacht Club Games, the sales breakdown is as follows:

  • Steam- 32%
  • Nintendo 3DS- 30%
  • Wii U- 20%
  • Sony Platforms- 14%
  • Xbox- 4%

With the notion that third party titles don’t sell particularly well on Nintendo systems, it’s always nice to see a well-reviewed game debunk that particular theory. The title’s strong eShop sales likely played an integral role in the upcoming Shovel Knight Amiibo figure set to debut early next year. Of particular interest is the game’s performance on Xbox. That particular version featured a cameo appearance by the Battletoads, so it’s surprising that Rare fans weren’t more eager to check out the title.

Yup, just finished the game last night. Pretty good, and now have the Plague of Shadows to try out. It did feel VERY Nintendo like, and I like the fact there is no slowdown. If this comes out physical on xbox, I may pick it up for the Battletoads stuff. However, I would like to have the 3DS version first. It’s a good portable game.
