Nintendo of Japan has made some changes to its terms of service for content creators. The company put out a statement indicating “we reserve the right to object to any content that we believe is unlawful, infringing, inappropriate, or not in line with the Guidelines.” The statement was made via the official Nintendo of Japan website. You can read some of it below:

We are humbled every day by your loyalty and passion for Nintendo’s games, characters and worlds, and respect that you want to be able to express yourself creatively by sharing your own original videos and images using content from our games.

As long as you follow some basic rules, we will not object to your use of gameplay footage and/or screenshots captured from games for which Nintendo owns the copyright (“Nintendo Game Content”) in the content you create for appropriate video and image sharing sites. To help guide you, we prepared the following guidelines:

So, what constitutes “inappropriate” in Nintendo’s estimation? That would be “graphic, explicit, harmful, or otherwise offensive content, including statements or actions that may be considered offensive, insulting, obscene or otherwise disturbing to others.” Which is still vague, admittedly, as any number of things can fall under this umbrella depending on your opinions. However, Nintendo has always liked to keep things as vanilla and safe as possible, so this remains consistent with the company’s strict content standards, whether for its games or anything else.

How this might impact influencers remains to be seen. We’ll keep you all posted.
