As part of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration, Yoshi is getting a new game of his own: Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. This new adventure introduces Mister Encyclopedia, or Mr. E for short, who comes crashing onto the land that the peaceful Yoshis inhabit.

As he explains to Yoshi in the trailer shown in today’s Nintendo Direct, while he contains a wealth of knowledge about mysterious creatures across the land, he can’t actually see the information himself. It’s up to Yoshi to fill in what appears to be missing data about these creatures, but he’ll have to gather that info in an unusual way: transporting himself into Mr. E’s pages.

The trailer shows Yoshi getting sucked into the pages and meeting a Crazee Dayzee (though its name is unrevealed in its encyclopedia entry and hidden behind “???”). Creatures can ride on Yoshi’s back like Baby Mario once did, and text will appear on-screen with information about the creature as Yoshi interacts more with it (like eating it to see what it tastes like). The creatures can affect their environments, like making flowers bloom, but they can also be negatively impacted by their environment. For example, the trailer shows Crazee Dayzee getting covered in dandelion spores, which it doesn’t seem to like all that much.

The game’s art style is beautiful, taking inspiration from hand drawn images of flora and fauna in old encyclopedias. It’s also really interesting seeing Yoshi interact with creatures that, in previous games, were foes and not friends. It also looks like he’ll be traversing a number of different areas, from walking open fields to fishing in lakes, surfing waves, braving storms, and more.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but is aiming for a Spring 2026 launch on Switch 2.
