As soon as that iconic opening cinematic music began playing during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, many a longtime video game fan instantly recognized the pleasant tones of composer Yoko Shimomura’s work in Super Mario RPG. While some might have initially expected that Nintendo was announcing the game would be coming to Nintendo Switch Online, instead they were treated to the news that a full-blown remake of Super Mario RPG is on the way, instead. The remake is also not all that far from release, as well, with a launch date penciled in for November 17. Soak in the announcement trailer right here:
Here’s what Nintendo has to say about the remake:
Originally released on Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics! Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists, turns and treasure. Mario must team up with his allies to face down a menacing force known as the Smithy Gang in order to recover seven stars and repair the Star Road. Whether you played the original game or have yet to take the journey, you can dive into this Nintendo Switch version of the very first RPG in the Super Mario series! Super Mario RPG launches for Nintendo Switch Nov. 17.
This SNES classic has a rabid following among fans, so it will be interesting to see how they react to the new visual style adopted for this remake. The wait for November will be a long one, but before you know it fans will be able to relive the glory of one of Mario’s greatest adventures—or experience it for the first time.
