Nintendo has announced the eventual announcement of an upcoming console codenamed the “NX.” Not much, if anything, is known about the console apart from its full announcement sometime next year in 2016. Speculation is high at this point, but nothing is concrete; Iwata has not given any solid facts about the console’s design, how it will work, if it will work alongside 3DS or Wii U, or if it will be a replacement to either.
With numerous companies working toward VR technology, it could be suggested that Nintendo would take another risk in the industry to produce a product akin to others. The image shown during the press release would suggest that the console is meant to work next to a 3DS and Wii U as a new product for the market to get its hands on, but there is nothing that has been confirmed beyond its codename.
However, Iwata had the following to say about the new console:
As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
