If anyone who read this headline is like me, their initial response to the words “Klonoa 2” and “eShop” being in the same sentence probably was shock: “Are PlayStation 2 games coming to the eShop?!” Outlandish, I know, but read on as I did and you come to find that we’re actually talking about Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament, a Game Boy Advance game. Deep breaths!
In any event, both GBA Klonoa titles will officially be available on Wii U once tomorrow’s update of the eShop rolls out. The first two console Klonoa titles were hybrid 2D/3D platformers; series creator Hideo Yoshizawa designed the first game as a direct response to the 3D platformer-overload that was consuming the market in the wake of Super Mario 64. The hope was to make a game that compromised between the old and new styles of platformers, and Yoshizawa succeeded in doing exactly that. These Game Boy Advance iterations of Klonoa, however, are set entirely in 2D, but the core mechanics of snagging enemies to either toss as deadly projectiles or use for a double jump remains intact. This writer encourages anyone who is a fan of fun games to give Klonoa 2 a look tomorrow!
