When Solid Snake and Sonic were revealed as the first third party characters to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, many fans were disheartened to learn that Capcom’s blue bomber wouldn’t be joining them. Well, that all changes when Mega Man makes his Smash debut in the as-of-yet untitled Super Smash Bros. games coming to Nintendo Wii U and 3DS in 2014.

From what we’ve seen, Mega Man will boast a number of his familiar abilities, including some copied from his Robot Master rivals. His partner Rush also appears to be at his side this time around, as well. Mega Man’s appearance should come as little surprise to most Nintendo fans. Not only has he appeared in some form on every Nintendo system since the days of the NES, but even his creator has wanted him to appear in the series. In 2008, Keiji Inafune had this to say about Mega Man’s exclusion from Super Smash Bros. Brawl: “That is probably a question better suited for Nintendo than for Capcom. If they were to ask, I see no reason to say no. We’ll see what happens.”

Mega Man won’t be the only new character joining the brawl, though. The generically named Villager from Animal Crossing will also be appearing this time around. Villager will boast a number of items and abilities from the series, including the bug catching net, axe and shovel. Nintendo has also confirmed that Mario, Pit, Samus, Link, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Pikachu, Kirby and Fox will all be returning, presumably along with several other characters.

While new details surrounding Super Smash Bros. are slim at this time, we did get a glimpse at some new locations, as well. New levels based on The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Nintendogs were both shown on the 3DS version, while locations from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword were shown on the Wii U version.

Stay tuned to Nintendojo where we’ll have much more about the new Super Smash Bros. titles as they emerge. And be sure to let us know what you think of the new challengers in the comments below!
