The newest Pokémon movie looks to be quite the interesting one. Nostalgic fans were quick to jump on Pokémon: I Choose You after the movie’s initial announcement. Since the film will offer a retelling of Ash Ketchum’s earliest adventures in the Indigo League, it would seem to be the perfect vehicle for lapsed fans to get back into the anime.
Unfortunately, some fans are finding themselves a bit disappointed regarding the film. While the movie will obviously put a new spin on some of the early events from the show, two major characters from the early days won’t reprise their roles. Brock and Misty, Ash’s earliest traveling companions, have been replaced by a pair of new characters, Makoto and Souji. While both Brock and Misty have been relegated to smaller supporting roles throughout the last decade or so, the pair were a beloved part of the franchise, leaving some fans understandably saddened by their absence. Brock and Misty do appear eventually, but not until the film’s end credits. In that particular sequence, Brock and Misty appear alongside several other characters from the history of the series, such as Tracey Sketchit. Whether or not the film is canon with the rest of the series is currently unknown.
Regardless of the exclusion, it will be interesting to see how Pokémon: I Choose You is received when it releases in North America. The new movie is getting a big push in Japan, however, and part of that will include a new Happy Meal promotion from McDonald’s. Unsurprisingly, the toys will mostly feature Pikachu and Ho-oh, but Charmander, Entei and Incineroar toys are also available. The promotion will begin July 14.
