Just as the Olympics roll around every two years like clockwork, so too does the Mario & Sonic at the Olympics series. 2020 will see the Summer Olympics occurring in Tokyo, so it only makes sense that Japan’s two biggest gaming mascots will keep their rivalry going in the homeland of both their respective companies.
Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will kick the competition off early when it releases on Nintendo Switch this winter. We don’t know how many events will be included, but we can expect to see Mario, Sonic, and their respective cadres of supporting characters compete against each other in a variety of summer sporting events. There will even be an arcade version released next year, a little closer to the actual competition.
For those who prefer their global sports tournaments with actual human beings instead of cartoony mascots, Sega will also be releasing Tokyo 2020 Olympics for Switch, though that will be arriving even earlier when it launches sometime this summer. In other words, there will plenty of ways to virtually take part in the Tokyo Olympics.
