Well this is an interesting tale. Shantae is a longtime series that has often found its home on Nintendo platforms. Indeed, the very first game appeared on Game Boy Color way back in 2002. Developer WayForward has decided to take a stroll down memory lane and revive the development of a sequel to that game which never saw the light of day on Game Boy Advance. Now dubbed Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, this sequel that never was will launch in 2024. Take a peek:
Here’s a bit about the game from Nintendo:
This action-adventure platformer features all of the hair-whipping, belly-dancing action that Shantae fans have come to expect, along with multiple chapters, numerous towns and labyrinths, six creature transformations, fierce bosses and a four-player versus mode. A new play mechanic allows Shantae to create new paths through each area by repositioning the foreground and background layers, and to move between layers to navigate and explore. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution launches for Nintendo Switch in 2024.
That bit about layers and moving the foreground and background sounds a wee bit like some of the mechanics in the 2010 DSiWare game Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, which was technically the original sequel to the first Shantae. It sounds like WayForward is finally going to be able to play around with the original gameplay gimmicks it had in store all those years ago.
