While Game Freak will always be known as the team behind the Pokémon phenomenon, the developer has made a number of games for other platforms over the last few years as part of the Gear Project initiative. The goal of the Gear Project initiative is to develop new games outside the company’s normal wheelhouse, and games such as HarmoKnight and Tembo the Badass Elephant have come about as a result.
Originally released for PC in 2016, Giga Wrecker Alt. follows the exploits of protagonist Reika as she deals with the fallout of a cataclysm caused by alien invaders. In the Metroidvania-inspired game, Reika can destroy and rebuild her surroundings in order to navigate the game’s world. The console version will feature 20 new puzzles as well as increased and decreased difficulty options.
No release date has been given at this time. Giga Wrecker Alt. will be published digitally by Rising Star Games, while a physical release will arrive courtesy of Limited Run Games. Whether or not the publisher will offer any sort of Collector’s Edition for the game is unknown.
Giga Wrecker Alt. received decent reviews upon its initial release. Hopefully the Switch version will be equally enjoyable. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information as it develops!
