Believe it or not, the Dynasty Warriors franchise hasn’t had a proper release on Switch yet. Yes, Nintendo’s newest console has seen several spin-offs, including versions built around Nintendo’s own franchises, Zelda and Fire Emblem. But the main series that started the whole concept of one versus thousands action hasn’t shown up yet; however, that will soon change.
The preposterously titled Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition was announced for Switch by publisher Koei Tecmo and, as the name suggests, it is as complete a version of Dynasty Warriors 8 as you can find. As always, the game tells the story of the Three Kingdoms Era of Chinese history in which the nation fell into civil war following the fall of the Han Empire. The game features numerous campaigns, not just for the three main kingdoms, but also for several other significant characters and factions. Speaking of characters, there are, of course, dozens and this version will feature them all alongside costumes that were previously released as DLC.
It might seem somewhat odd that Koei Tecmo is bringing this game to Switch since it released in its original form over five years ago. However, the decision makes more sense when you consider the fact that, despite bringing significant changes to a series long criticized for not evolving enough, Dynasty Warriors 9 was met with almost universally negative reviews from fans and critics alike.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition will be available on December 28 this year, and those who pick it up within the first week will get a 10 percent discount off of the normal $39.99 asking price. Also, anyone who has also purchased Warriors Orochi 4 for Switch will earn some additional costumes as well.
