Yesterday, a report from Forbes leaked, revealing the long-rumored existence of a Diablo III port on Switch. Murmurs about the project had been around for months from several different outlets, but yesterday’s leak seemed far more credible than anything else that had been rumored in the past. Clearly, that must have caused the major players involved to speed up their plans because today, Nintendo and Blizzard officially announced that Diablo III Eternal Collection will arrive on Switch later this year!
Diablo III Eternal Collection is being touted as a “definitive edition” by Blizzard. The title will include the main game as well as the Reaper of Souls expansion, the Rise of the Necromancer pack, and some Switch-exclusive content, including The Legend of Ganondorf armor set! In a change from the PC version, the title’s Adventure mode will be accessible to players right away, without requiring them to complete the single player campaign. Unfortunately, while cross-play has been embraced by Nintendo of late, the feature will not be available, at least at the outset. In an interview with Eurogamer, Blizzard left the possibility open, however.
It’s not available at this time. I wouldn’t ever take anything off the table, it’s something we’re exploring, that we’re interested in. But it is not currently a feature.”
Though Diablo III is yet another older port (the game debuted on PC in 2012), its presence is certainly another major win for Switch. The title is the first Blizzard game to appear on a Nintendo platform in quite some time, and the game’s exclusive features and portability will likely encourage fans and old and new to check it out.
While the game is expected to release this fall, there is no announced date for Diablo III Eternal Collection at this time. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information as it develops!
