Look, I’m going to be frank: I was shocked by just how much Yoku’s Island Express captivated me. Metroidvanias are becoming more and more common, particularly amongst indie developers, but Yoku’s mix of traditional platforming and pinball mechanics is on a whole other level. It doesn’t hurt that the entire game looks like a living painting.
Still, it can be tough for some folks to give newer, unproven quantities like Yoku’s a shot. Thankfully, now there’s no excuse not to try the game out, as it’s gotten a free demo on the Nintendo eShop! Give it a download on your Switch and find out for yourself why this is easily one of the best games to have come out this year. It’s a genuinely unique and innovative title that deserves as much attention as it can get.
