Nintendo Badge Arcade made its debut back in 2015 to a mixed response from fans. We were fond of the digital service/game back when it bowed, noting at the time that “the mix of free plays and reasonable payment options makes this an example of how to do free-to-play right.” We’d argue that Badge Arcade is even better in its present state, with much more regular free plays thrown in and an even larger assortment of badges to choose from. However, Nintendo recently announced on its 3DS Facebook page (via the adorable bunny that acts as the lone worker inside of the game’s arcade!) that changes are coming. Here’s the full text:
Hi there!First off, I have big news!Next week will mark the release of our8,500’th badge in the Nintendo Badge Arcade!Isn’t that exciting? There is some bad newsthough…it seems we are running out of space…In other words, we won’t be making any morenew badges for the Arcade. My boss decidedthat 6/22 will be when we release ourlast new set of badges!Since I won’t have any new badges totalk about, my duties are slightly changing in theArcade! I will still greet everyone at the door, but I may be a little too busy to stay and chat!– Arcade Bunny
While it’s clear that there won’t be any new badges, what isn’t understood at this point is whether or not Nintendo plans to totally shutter Badge Arcade come June 22. For fans who have invested a lot of time and even money into the application, it will be very frustrating indeed if access is cutoff to the badges they don’t have stored on their 3DS and 2DS systems; there’s a limit to how many badges players can have on a system at once, with the remainder saved within the Badge Arcade servers until they come and swap them out. We’ll keep you posted as the story develops!
