Top Ten: Super Mario Songs

It’s-a Mario time! Kyle counts down his top ten favorite tunes from the Mario games.

1. Wind Garden

Super Mario Galaxy

There was never a doubt in my mind that any other piece of music from a Mario game would take the top spot on this list. Wind Garden, the theme from the Gusty Garden Galaxy, is simply incredible. I consider it to be one of the best pieces of video game music ever composed, if not the single greatest of all time. It starts out great, and climbs in intensity until you reach mind-melting levels of awesomeness at its great climax which becomes the main theme of Super Mario Galaxy (it happens at the 1:25 mark in the video above).

This track, and the whole soundtrack of Super Mario Galaxy, really shows the power that video game music can have. The fact that Koji Kondo and Mahito Yokota designed the music to be played by an orchestra and that Nintendo gathered one together in order to record the soundtrack is just amazing. This music takes players on an incredible journey through time and space. It’s not just good video game music, it’s legitimate and damn good music. Just listen to it again and again, you’ll see what I mean. GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

Well, that wraps it up for my Top Ten Super Mario Music Extravaganza. Were your favorite Mario tunes included in the list? Do you completely object to and despise the countdown? You make your own list then, smarty pants. No seriously, please do. Put your favorite Mario tunes in the comments below!

Some other great Mario music that just missed the cut:

Main Theme of Yoshi’s Island DS and Neo Bowser City from Mario Kart 7

Dire, Dire Docks from Super Mario 64, The Final Bowser Battle from Super Mario 3D Land and the Ground Theme from Super Mario World.

Great list, Kyle! I’m a little sad to see that this wasn’t on the list, though! ;) (or the Bowser’s Lava Lair version from Super Mario Galaxy 2!)

Couldn’t agree more about Wind Garden, though. Easily the best Mario song ever composed. Hearing Super Mario 64‘s Main Theme in Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also one of my favourite moments in the entire game, so I’m very pleased to see that at number three too! :)

(PS: is it weird that I’m also quite partial to the Mario Paint theme? Probably…)

Hmm, got to say i didnt like your list that much, i tought it will be just super mario (main series) music. But, i have to agree with you on the number one spot. For music lovers that particular track is just mind blowing. Gusty garden is my favourite levwl of the galaxy series, and i think that the music is the main reason why i keep coming back for more. Hands down the greatest mario theme ever.

Why would you list other Mario games besides the main Mario titles? Mario Kart and RPG outings shouldn’t be lumped in also. You could seriously have a top ten list from just Galaxy 1 and 2, so this list is very short sighted.

I wanted to go for variety here, otherwise it could have just ended up as a Top Ten overworld theme list! I also couldn’t forget about the RPGs which are near and dear to me and have great music that is even better than the main series at some points.
