Nintendojo Toy Box: Star Fox Adventures Bobblehead

Say what you will about Rare’s Star Fox Adventures, if nothing else it provided the world with a fine bobblehead of Fox McCloud. The bobble is a resin/ceramic mixture, standing proud between five and six inches in height. Fox’s staff is detachable, so if you ever find one out in the wild, make sure it’s not missing. Sadly, kid-me did not save the excellent packaging nor the certificate of authenticity, but finding both would be a true boon for any collector. This was available as a pre-order bonus at Target stores here in the US when the game was first released.

Yet another little subdivision of video game toy collecting exists in the form of preorder bonuses. Nowadays, it’s a lot harder to get physical goodies for plunking down cash on a future release; most preorders focus on DLC, generally to cut back on the cost of supplying things like keychains or figurines to retailers (not to mention producing them). At $60 a pop for a new game, though, I’m hard-pressed to feel any sympathy for the cost-cutting! When Adventures dropped, giveaways like this were a bit more common, though the sheer size and quality of this Fox bobble was exceptional, for sure.

There are still companies that grace customers with physical bonuses, though. Natsume, for example, is offering a puppy plushie for preording Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley at GameStop. A lot of companies are also still offering tangible trinkets in things like collector’s and limited edition versions of games. The tradeoff is a steeper price tag, but for folks like me (and I’m sure many people reading this), the additional cost is worth it for something like a statue or a scarf!
