It has been a busy time for retro gaming enthusiasts of late. Let’s start with the news that Sonic Origins has finally gotten an official release date. The game, which contains four classic Sonic releases, launches on June 23. You can check it out, along with some of the new animations being incorporated in, in this trailer:
So, which four Sonic games are included? Glad you asked:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
- Sonic CD
There are a number of digital editions of the game (no physical release for this one, at least for now) to check out, These bundles have raised some eyebrows as the different tiers of purchase apparently unlock various modes and so forth from the get go, as opposed to unlocking them naturally during the course of gameplay. You can look for yourself at the official website, but it seems that if nothing else the premium bundles provide some extra content that won’t be available otherwise. That said, the infographic also makes it appear that there’s no single version of the game that offers all of the available content…
Moving along, there’s an option to play what is called story mode where all of the games can be played in sequence with new animations included at different points throughout. It’s a cool addition that helps flesh out Sonic’s adventures for diehard fans who love the lore of the Blue Blur. Boss Rush lets players take on the bosses in order while Mirror Mode offers mirrored versions of stages to tackle. It’s shaping up to be a wonderful celebration of Sonic’s earliest, and arguably best, adventures.
