A game where cheating is the point.

Long ago, during the time when multiplayer gaming meant sharing a TV with somebody, many games utilized split screens to give each player a view of the action. In competitive games, this led many gamers to develop what some might say is a useful tactic, and others might say is a dirty cheat- screen watching. With a strong knowledge of level layouts, a player could look toward their opponent’s screen and quickly judge where they were, thus giving them a distinct advantage. As someone who frequently did this in GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, I think it’s a perfectly legitimate way to play the game, but I can understand that not everybody agreed.

Indie developer Samurai Punk have gone ahead and made a game where screen watching isn’t just possible, but it’s the main point. In Screencheat: Unplugged, an updated version of an FPS originally released in 2014, every player is actually invisible, so you’ll need to look toward their screen to figure out where they are. It’s easy to imagine how this could grow frustrating, but the developers have countered that by making every weapon a one-hit kill and designing the levels with color-coordinated sections and plenty of recognizable landmarks. Of course, it should also help that the game is obviously meant to be more of wacky party game than a serious, competitive affair. In addition to your usual shooter game modes, there are some new ideas such as Capture the Fun, which apparently involves a piƱata, and Murder Mystery.

Screencheat: Unplugged will be available on the Switch eShop on November 29. Preordering the game will net you a 20 percent discount off its normal $12.99 price.
