When trade functionality was finally added to Pokémon TCG Pocket back at the end of January, it was met with a mixed response from fans. Yes, it was nice to finally be able to swap cards with other players, but in typical Nintendo fashion, there were pointless hoops put in place for users to jump through. Trade Tokens are yet another form of currency in Pokémon TCG Pocket that allows players to exchange cards. What should have been a simple feature was instead mutated into a convoluted mess that was more of a deterrent than an enticement to play the game.

Thankfully, the backlash was so strong that The Pokémon Company has shifted gears and will be removing Trade Tokens later this year. Here’s the announcement, shared via the official Pokémon TCG Pocket X account:

In brief, the currency is going away come the fall of 2025. However, while tokens will be removed, now players will instead utilize shinedust. As the notice states, this means the developers will have to increase how much shinedust players acquire because it’s also used to obtain flair. While it’s nice to see The Pokémon Company listening to fans, whether or not these changes will make things better remains to be seen.
