Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment has signed on to produce a live-action movie adaptation of the popular video game franchise The Sims. The film will be directed by Kate Herron, who is known for helming the first season of the Disney+ series Loki. Herron will co-write the screenplay with Briony Redman, with whom she has previously collaborated on projects like Doctor Who.
In addition to Robbie, the producing team includes LuckyChap partners Josey McNamara and Tom Ackerley, as well as Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment. The Sims publisher Electronic Arts will also be involved in a creative and producing capacity. The Sims is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with over 200 million copies sold since the first game’s release in 2000. The life simulation series allows players to create and control virtual “Sims” characters, guiding them through various aspects of life such as relationships, careers, and hobbies.
This is not the first time a Sims movie adaptation has been in development. Rights for a film were previously acquired by 20th Century Fox in 2007, but the project was canceled in 2019 following Disney’s acquisition of the studio. With Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment behind the new Sims movie, and the success of their recent Barbie film, anticipation is high for how they will bring the iconic video game franchise to the big screen.
