Digital Eclipse continues to just kill it (no pun intended) with its various retro compilations, but Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is well on its way to becoming one of the developers highest achievements. The various interviews and archival materials to enjoy are a huge part of what makes these compilations from Digital Eclipse special (see Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration), the games are the centerpiece and always treated as such. Indeed, often of late the developer even goes so far as to include canceled and unfinished games in these collections, digging into the past to preserve even the most obscure of experiences. Such is the case with Legacy Kollection, which will boast a very unusual game among its offerings.

First, the trailer:

And here are the games:

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis | Game Boy | Game Gear)
  • Mortal Kombat II – 1993 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis | Game Boy | 32X)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade | SNES | Genesis)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade | WaveNet Arcade | SNES)
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy – 1996 (PlayStation)
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997 (Arcade)
  • Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero – 1997 (PlayStation)
  • Mortal Kombat Special Forces – 2000 (PlayStation)
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001 (Game Boy Advance)
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002 (Game Boy Advance)
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003 (Game Boy Advance)

Did you spot it? Nestled in alongside the SNES and arcade iterations of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is the WaveNet Arcade version. This oddball relic was a demo available for play only via special WaveNet-networked arcade cabinets. These cabinets, connected via T1 broadband lines (a means of connecting online that was never widely adopted), linked a few test locations in Chicago and San Francisco directly to Midway’s headquarters. Any WaveNet-compatible titles have been utter vapor as access to the network was incredibly limited. To be able to play this version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is plain bonkers and says a lot about the dedication from the Digital Eclipse team when it comes to game preservation.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will launch on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, but there’s no firm release date. The physical edition is an LRG production and Atari’s website says that the game will ship on 12.12.25 (pre-orders end 08.31.25, btw), but there’s no word on when the digital launch will be. Once we learn that date, we’ll share it all with you.
