SEGA Sammy released its fiscal year 2024 financial report and within it there were some interesting tidbits, not the least of which one pertaining to Sonic Superstars. The game launched in October and, while certainly a fun installment in the series, it has apparently not quite lived up to SEGA’s sales prognostications. According to the report, Sonic Superstars experienced “a slightly weaker start than [they] had anticipated.”
That said, the report does go on to note that “Sonic IP sells the most is mainly November to December, and more than 90% of this title’s marketing cost will be spent in the Thanksgiving and holiday season from November onwards.” The section of the report concludes by stating that SEGA plans to support the game on a marketing level in the same way that it did Sonic Frontiers, which just recently got its final DLC expansion.
Beyond Sonic Superstars, Sonic Origins Plus has apparently been doing very stronly by comparison—which does make one wonder if abandoning pixel art for future 2D Sonic games is a decision SEGA might want to reconsider. SEGA is also banking on continued licensing of the Sonic IP as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie to bolster numbers once it’s released in December of next year, according to the report. Are you someone who bought Sonic Superstars at launch, or have you been holding out for the holiday shopping season? Or are you not planning to buy it at all?
